The Mediation Council of India (MCI), established under a 2023 law, has begun operations from its New Delhi offices. The council aims to regulate mediation service providers and mediators, set standards, and promote mediation across India. This initiative is expected to help ease the significant pressure on Indian courts, which currently have approximately 35 million pending cases. Mediation is an alternative dispute resolution method where a neutral third party facilitates settlements, distinct from binding arbitration.
