Maternity Leave Law Linked To Decline In Women's Manufacturing Employment: Study
Hindustan Times · business
A recent study found that India's 2017 amendment increasing paid maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks was followed by an 8.4% decline in women's employment and a 2.6% rise in men's employment at covered manufacturing firms. The number of days women worked fell by 9.5%, while men's workdays rose by 2.1%. Researchers suggest this occurred because employers had to bear the cost of the extended leave. The study recommends shifting maternity leave financing to social insurance to mitigate these negative employment effects.
