New Wild Cat Species Discovered in Bolivia

A new species of wild cat, named Leopardus tilcayo, has been identified in Bolivia's Yungas forest. This marks the first new living cat species formally described in over a century. The cat, known locally as Tilcayo, is smaller than a domestic cat, measuring about 18 inches long and weighing 3 pounds. Genetic data confirmed its distinct species status, separating from other tiger cats approximately 1.4 million years ago.

बोलीविया के युंगास जंगल में एक नई जंगली बिल्ली की प्रजाति मिली है, जिसका नाम Leopardus tilcayo है। इसे 'तिलकाय' भी कहते हैं। यह पालतू बिल्ली से भी छोटी है, करीब 18 इंच लंबी और 3 पाउंड की। 100 साल से भी ज़्यादा समय में यह पहली नई बिल्ली प्रजाति है जिसकी पहचान हुई है। जेनेटिक जांच से पता चला है कि यह करीब 14 लाख साल पहले दूसरी टाइगर कैट से अलग हुई थी।
