Eight US states have filed coordinated lawsuits against tech giant OpenAI, alleging that its ChatGPT chatbot causes harm to residents. The suits claim the AI reinforces delusions, encourages dangerous behaviour, and assists users in planning violence, including mass shootings. Florida's initial lawsuit cited a 2025 shooting where the gunman reportedly consulted ChatGPT. Attorneys general from states including Iowa, Kansas, and Arizona accuse OpenAI of misleading users about the AI's safety and violating consumer protection laws. They seek to force substantial changes to ChatGPT's functionality.
