Justices MM Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale noted that annual directions to control firecracker pollution have had limited impact. They suggested that influential figures could help communicate the importance of celebrating Diwali without fireworks, especially in Delhi. The court also questioned the historical association of fireworks with the festival, suggesting they were a later addition.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने दिवाली को पटाखों से मुक्त रखने के लिए जन जागरूकता अभियान में क्रिकेटर विराट कोहली जैसी जानी-मानी हस्तियों को शामिल करने का प्रस्ताव दिया है। जस्टिस एमएम सुंदरेश और प्रसन्ना बी वराले ने कहा कि पटाखों के प्रदूषण को नियंत्रित करने के सालाना निर्देशों का असर बहुत कम रहा है। उन्होंने सुझाव दिया कि प्रभावशाली लोग, खासकर दिल्ली में, पटाखों के बिना दिवाली मनाने के महत्व को बताने में मदद कर सकते हैं। कोर्ट ने पटाखों के त्योहार से ऐतिहासिक जुड़ाव पर भी सवाल उठाया और कहा कि यह बाद में जोड़ा गया होगा।
