US Organ Donor Group Faces Decertification After Patient's Near-Fatal Ordeal
Times of India - India · india
The US Department of Health and Human Services has begun the process of decertifying Network for Hope, an organ donation coordinator, following serious patient safety concerns. The decision stems from a case in October 2021 where Anthony Thomas "TJ" Hoover II, declared brain-dead after a drug overdose, showed signs of life during organ retrieval preparations. His sister testified that Hoover was thrashing and grabbing the doctor's hands, indicating he was alive. The procedure was halted, but Hoover, though still alive, suffers from lasting cognitive and psychological issues.
