RBI Extends Forex Risk Reserve to Banks' Own Hedging Contracts

Business Standard · business

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has extended the foreign exchange risk reserve (FERR) requirement to rupee derivative contracts used by authorised dealers for hedging their own currency risks. Unlike previous rules for user contracts, there is no minimum threshold for these new directions. Authorised dealers must now maintain a 20 per cent reserve in cash with the RBI for eligible derivative contracts where they purchase foreign currency against the rupee. These measures follow recent steps to curb dollar demand and support the rupee amid market pressures.
