Hong Kong's 1868 Deer Gift to Hawaii Now Numbering 60,000, Causing Damage

Hindustan Times · environment

In 1868, Hong Kong gifted Hawaii eight axis deer as a gesture of goodwill, which were released on Molokaʻi. Their descendants now number approximately 60,000 across Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi, causing significant damage to crops, native plants, and forests. These deer, native to India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, thrive due to the absence of natural predators in Hawaii. Their unchecked proliferation threatens the islands' unique ecosystems, with some estimates suggesting a need to remove 20-30% of the herd annually to control their population.
