Rats removed from Hawadax Island, seabirds and kelp

Invasive Norway rats, introduced to Alaska's Hawadax Island centuries ago, devastated seabird populations and disrupted the intertidal food web. A 2008 eradication effort successfully removed all rats. Eleven years later, a 2021 study confirmed the return of nesting seabirds and the recovery of a kelp-rich ecosystem. This ecological restoration highlights the significant impact of invasive species and the success of targeted conservation efforts in rebuilding island biodiversity.
