The Yemeni city of Taiz is facing a severe waste management crisis, with hundreds of thousands of residents trapped between uncollected rubbish and toxic smoke. Sanitation trucks cannot reach the main landfill due to Houthi forces laying siege to the city since early October. Snipers have been deployed near the landfill, and staff have faced gunfire, preventing waste disposal. Compounding the issue, an acute fuel shortage has further hampered collection efforts, leading desperate residents to burn the accumulating waste, causing suffocation and health concerns.
