Rare Genetic Epilepsy Driven By Liver And Brain, Study Reveals

Times of India · science

New research indicates that ECHS1 Deficiency, a rare genetic disorder with no approved treatment, presents a more complex picture than previously understood. Contrary to the belief that epilepsy symptoms originate solely in the brain, this study suggests organs like the liver may actively contribute to the disease's progression. Scientists created an animal model to observe metabolic changes in the liver, blood, and brain simultaneously. Findings revealed neuroinflammation in older animals and highlighted the crucial distinction between brain-specific damage and metabolic issues elsewhere, particularly the liver, for developing effective treatments.
