Couple Refused National Park, Got $55,000

A Texas couple, Walter and Bertha Glover, refused to sell their land for the creation of Guadalupe Mountains National Park in the 1960s. Despite repeated negotiations and offers, including $35,000 and a life estate in 1970, they held out. In 1972, a court awarded them $55,000 and the right to live on their property. Bertha continued operating their café until her death in 1982, after which their daughter was allowed to stay until the end of the year.
