Hindustan Times · environment

Latur district in Maharashtra has been declared a 'water scarcity zone' for one year due to a significant decline in groundwater levels, reportedly by 4.58 metres, following insufficient monsoon rains. The administration has imposed restrictions on groundwater extraction and borewell digging under the Maharashtra Groundwater Act 2009. Digging wells deeper than 60 metres for agriculture or industry is prohibited, and new borewells cannot be dug within 500 metres of public drinking water sources.
