Jeff Bezos began acquiring West Texas ranchland in 2004, accumulating 165,000 acres by 2005 for Blue Origin's private spaceflight operations. Originally named Corn Ranch, the remote location was chosen for rocket development and testing away from populated areas. On July 20, 2021, Bezos launched from this site aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket for the company's first human spaceflight. This mission, carrying four people to the edge of space, marked a significant milestone in Bezos' long-term ambition to expand human access to space.
