Greenpeace Dumps Boulders in North Sea MPA To Block Industrial Fishing

Greenpeace activists have deployed nine large limestone boulders in the Southern North Sea Marine Protected Area to create an underwater barrier against industrial fishing. The operation, which took place on October 31, aims to close approximately 45 square miles of the protected zone to bottom trawling. This direct action follows warnings to the government about the continued threat of bottom trawling to marine biodiversity, including harbour porpoises. Greenpeace argues that MPA designations are insufficient without restrictions on destructive fishing practices.
