Maharashtra FDA to Expand Scrutiny of Supplements Over Misleading Claims

FDA is intensifying its oversight of nutraceuticals, focusing on ingredients, packaging, and misleading claims. FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe described current findings as "disturbing," noting products often lack advertised ingredients. The expanded scrutiny will cover content, consumption, prescription, and sales. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) previously identified similar issues, with nutraceuticals comprising 52% of its food advertising cases, 96% of which required modification due to unsubstantiated health claims.
