The Guardian · world

A chance Instagram photo led to the discovery of a new giant waterlily species in Colombia's Inírida River. World-renowned waterlily expert Carlos Magdalena suspected the plant in a photo was unusual, as its location was outside the known range of similar species. After years of analysis and securing permits, Magdalena led an expedition that located the critically endangered waterlilies. This discovery highlights that much remains unknown about biodiversity, even in well-studied plant families. The plant is so large it is visible from space.
