Environmentalists and residents in Karnataka's Western Ghats districts are challenging claims made by state politicians regarding the Kasturirangan report. Politicians had urged the Centre to limit the Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) to notified forest areas, a move activists call misleading. They argue the report, though not perfect, is crucial for protecting the remaining natural landscape and water security for peninsular India.
