Northern Ireland Secretary Bans Protestant Parade Through Catholic District
Hindustan Times · world
Britain's Northern Ireland Secretary has banned a contentious Protestant parade through a mostly Irish nationalist and Catholic district in Portadown. The Parades Commission had initially authorised 35 Orangemen to march silently on September 27, but thousands blocked the procession, halting the first parade in nearly three decades. The minister cited public safety concerns and a significant change in circumstances for the decision. Police had warned that facilitating the march carried an unacceptable risk of serious injury and disorder, potentially damaging trust in the peace process.
