Following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, domestic pigs left behind escaped and interbred with wild boar. A study published in the Journal of Forest Research analyzed samples from 191 wild boar and 10 domestic pigs collected between 2015 and 2018. Researchers identified 31 hybrid individuals, with some showing significant domestic ancestry even after multiple generations. The study explored how domestic genetic material persists in the wild boar population, noting differences in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA inheritance patterns.
