Hawaii's Red Mangroves Introduced for Shoreline Stability Now Threaten Native Bird Habitats
Hindustan Times · environment
Red mangroves were introduced to Hawaii's Molokai island in 1902 to stabilize coastal mudflats and prevent soil erosion. However, the trees spread rapidly across the islands, invading canals and streams, causing drainage issues and foul odors. This invasive spread has significantly reduced vital habitat for four native Hawaiian waterbirds, including the endangered Hawaiian stilt. While mangroves were not the primary cause of the birds' initial decline, they are now a major obstacle to their recovery by occupying essential feeding and nesting grounds.
