Plague Never Disappeared, Remains a Threat Amidst Fresh Alarm
Hindustan Times · health
Concerns over plague have resurfaced following the death of a worker at a research institute in Siberia, though Russian authorities stated no evidence of the disease was found. The plague, infamous for historical pandemics, never truly vanished and continues to circulate globally, with thousands of cases reported annually. While treatable with antibiotics today, untreated forms remain highly fatal. The bacterium Yersinia pestis, which causes plague, naturally exists in rodent populations and can spread to humans via fleas. This ongoing presence underscores the need for continued vigilance against the ancient disease.
