Alaska Rivers Turn Orange Due to Thawing Permafrost

Scientists observed Alaska's rivers turning orange in 2018, a phenomenon now linked to changing water chemistry. New research reveals that as permafrost thaws, water interacts with deeper minerals, releasing acidity and metals. Studies in six Brooks Range watersheds found acidic seeps with significantly higher metal concentrations than mainstem rivers. This natural acid rock drainage, driven by thawing permafrost, can result in water chemistry comparable to that found near metal mines.
