Myanmar Refugees Gain Legal Work Rights in Thailand After Aid Cuts
DW World · world
Thailand has granted legal work permits to thousands of Myanmar refugees who previously lived in camps, allowing them to earn an income outside for the first time. This policy reversal in October 2025 came after significant aid cutbacks from organizations like USAID, forcing refugees to seek self-sufficiency. While the program offers hope, its first year has revealed notable shortcomings. Around 6,800 refugees have entered the Thai labor force, with individuals like Ray Boe earning daily wages to support themselves and their families.
