Island Fox Population Recovers After Golden Eagle Predation Crisis
Hindustan Times · environment
The island fox population on Santa Rosa Island plummeted from nearly 1,800 in 1994 to just 15 in the late 1990s due to golden eagle predation. This decline was exacerbated by introduced feral pigs, which sustained the eagles, a phenomenon known as hyperpredation. Following a conservation effort and emergency listing under the Endangered Species Act in 2004, the population rebounded to approximately 1,200 by 2015.
