Niger's military government has appointed a new chief of the armed forces, General Mamane Sani Kiaou, replacing General Moussa Salaou Barmou. This reshuffle follows a failed mutiny late last month. General Abdourahmane Abou Zataka has been promoted to army chief of staff. The mutiny, which involved fighting at key sites, saw dozens killed or arrested. Analysts suggest the mutiny stemmed from anger over worsening attacks and poor military conditions.
