Invading Plants Show Higher Competitive Ability Than Native Species: Study
Mongabay India · environment
A recent study using Canadian horseweed (Erigeron canadensis) found that invasive plant populations exhibit significantly higher competitive ability compared to their native counterparts. This advantage was observed to be 19.2% greater in non-native populations than in native ones. The research involved a large-scale experiment with plants from 100 native and 165 non-native populations under various watering conditions. Findings suggest that enhanced competitive ability can evolve independently in different regions, rather than solely through the spread of a single, already competitive lineage. This has implications for understanding and managing invasive species.
