NPCI to Implement MDR Charges on UPI Payments Post-Diwali

The Hindu - Business · business

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges on select person-to-merchant UPI transactions will be implemented after Diwali. This decision was made by the UPI and Services Steering Committee, considering the ongoing festive season. Earlier, the government permitted charging MDR, with transactions over ₹2,000 attracting a 0.4% fee. Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra believes this small fee will not significantly impact UPI transaction volumes.
