Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray and NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar have joined local protests against the felling of over 32,000 trees in Karjat for a proposed hydroelectric project. The leaders criticized the central and state governments for permitting large-scale tree cutting, citing environmental concerns for the region connecting Mumbai and Pune. The ₹13,500-crore project by Torrent Power requires clearing 370 hectares, including forest land. Protests began after tree-cutting commenced, with political leaders now supporting the locals' opposition to the destruction of biodiversity and ecosystems.
