The Indian government has acknowledged in the Supreme Court that hospitals are charging exorbitant markups on medicines and medical supplies. Some drugs reportedly have markups ranging from 170% to over 700%, while medical supplies can see markups of 100% to 1,000%. This practice, termed malpractice by the government, often goes unnoticed by patients who are billed the MRP. The government is considering steps to address this issue, which contributes to millions falling into poverty annually due to healthcare costs.
