A 32-year-old chimpanzee named Toby, who spent nearly his entire life in an Indiana garage, has been rescued. Following his owner's death, the family reportedly planned to follow instructions to shoot Toby rather than transfer him. Animal welfare advocates intervened urgently, citing federal laws protecting chimpanzees under the Endangered Species Act. Federal officials confirmed that harming Toby would be a federal crime, preventing his immediate death. Toby has now been transferred to a sanctuary in Florida to begin a new life.
