Mount Ijen in Indonesia, part of the Ijen UNESCO Global Geopark, offers a unique and adventurous trek. This active volcano is renowned for its striking turquoise-blue crater lake and the rare phenomenon of blue fire. The trek, which begins at midnight to catch the sunrise, is physically demanding but rewarding. The blue flames are caused by burning sulphur-rich gases igniting upon contact with oxygen, creating a spectacle visible primarily in darkness. While mesmerising, the volcanic fumes can be harmful, reminding visitors of the active environment.
