Sebi Aligns Rupee Derivative Norms With RBI's $5 Million Threshold

Mint · stocks

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has introduced a uniform $5 million limit for outstanding positions in rupee-related currency derivatives for domestic clients and foreign portfolio investors (FPIs). This move aligns with the RBI revised thresholds, consolidating all rupee-related currency pairs under a single aggregate limit. Previously, positions in individual contracts were treated separately. The new framework allows positions up to $5 million without requiring underlying exposure, though FPIs exceeding this for long positions must demonstrate exposure in Indian debt or equity.
