Karnataka Coffee Cultivation Area Stagnant Due To Rigid Laws, Says KPA Chairman
The Hindu · india
Karnataka's coffee cultivation area has remained stagnant for 15-20 years, despite the state producing over 70% of India's coffee. KPA Chairman M. Salman Baseer cited rigid land conversion laws, underfunded subsidies, and high interest rates as key reasons hindering expansion. Global competitors like Vietnam and Brazil are rapidly expanding their cultivation areas. Baseer stressed the need for policy focus on yield intensification, climate-resilient planting, and aggressive branding of gourmet coffees to maintain global competitiveness. He also called for integrating coffee into weather-based insurance schemes and modernizing legislation.
