Polls have opened in Germany for elections in two key states: Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The results could significantly impact Chancellor Friedrich Merz's political future, as the far-right AfD party is expected to gain ground. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the AfD is polling at 37%, ahead of the SPD's 33%. For the first time, 16 and 17-year-olds are eligible to vote in these elections.
