UPI Merchant Fee Rollout May Be Delayed To January

Hindustan Times · business

The Indian government is reportedly considering postponing the implementation of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) fees on large Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions. Originally slated for October 15, the charges might now take effect in January, according to industry and regulatory sources. This delay would allow payment firms to update systems and avoid issues during India's festive season. The new framework imposes a 0.4% fee on UPI payments over ₹2,000 to merchants, with specific exemptions for person-to-person transfers and certain categories.
