Vigilantism Erodes State Authority, Undermines Democracy

Hindustan Times · politics

Vigilantism, often co-opted by the state for order, has historically served as an untrained and unaccountable wing for governments in India. From cow protection movements to militias, these groups pursue alleged criminals and right perceived wrongs through violence. While governments may find tactical deniability in these informal arrangements, such actions paradoxically threaten the state by eroding its formal authority. When citizen participation becomes vitiated by unauthorized agents, the ramifications for democracy can be far-reaching and irreversible.
