French Solar Farms Boost Native Wildflowers, Supporting Bees and Butterflies

Times of India · environment

Solar farms in Southern France are proving beneficial for native wildflowers and pollinators like bees and butterflies, challenging the notion that such installations are uniformly harmful. Research at 20 sites revealed that plants between solar panel rows, in partial shade, continued to attract pollinators, though in lower numbers than in unshaded areas. While plants under constant shade saw significantly fewer visits, the overall findings suggest that solar installations can be managed to support biodiversity. Unexpectedly, grazing proved more beneficial for pollinator abundance than mowing.
