USGS Mapped Tennessee's Hidden Groundwater With 25 Dye Injections

Times of India · science

In 2024, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mapped Tennessee's vulnerable groundwater systems using 25 dye injections across nearly 8 miles. This research, conducted between January 2022 and March 2023 in southern Tennessee, defined recharge areas for six major springs, spanning up to 65 square miles. The study highlights how pollution entering sinking streams can directly contaminate these vital underground water sources. These springs are crucial for communities, agriculture, and sensitive ecosystems, underscoring the fragility of karst terrain.
