Indian Railway Porters Face Income Decline Amid Modernisation
The Hindu · india
Railway porters across Uttar Pradesh are experiencing a significant drop in daily earnings due to modernisation efforts and changing passenger habits. The increasing use of wheeled suitcases, elevators, escalators, and battery-powered vehicles has reduced the need for their services. Many porters, like Umesh Maurya who has worked for 12 years, are now earning half of what they used to and are seeking alternative employment. Vikash Katiyar noted that new infrastructure and luggage trends have nearly eliminated their jobs, prompting him to support his son's tea shop venture.
