The US government's budget deficit surged to nearly $2 trillion in fiscal year 2026, marking the highest shortfall in five years. This widening gap, reaching $1.99 trillion, was driven by increased debt payments, tariff refunds, and higher spending on social benefits and defence. Government expenditure rose significantly by 6% to $7.40 trillion, outpacing a 3% increase in revenue to $5.40 trillion. The cost of servicing national debt also hit a record $1.36 trillion, contributing substantially to the fiscal challenge.
