कांग्रेस नेता रणदीप सिंह सुरजेवाला ने गुजरात सरकार से सौराष्ट्र क्षेत्र के सूखाग्रस्त इलाकों को आधिकारिक तौर पर सूखाग्रस्त घोषित करने का औपचारिक अनुरोध किया है। इस मांग का उद्देश्य प्रभावित आबादी के लिए वित्तीय मुआवजे के पैकेजों और आवश्यक राहत उपायों के तत्काल कार्यान्वयन को सुविधाजनक बनाना है। हालांकि, सत्तारूढ़ भाजपा ने कांग्रेस के दावों को "भ्रामक" करार दिया है। विपक्षी दल इस क्षेत्र में गंभीर जल संकट और कृषि तथा आजीविका पर इसके प्रभाव को दूर करने के लिए सरकारी हस्तक्षेप की वकालत कर रहा है।
