The Indian government has postponed the implementation of potential charges on UPI payments until Diwali, providing significant relief to merchants and consumers. This decision was made after traders appealed to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to defer or withdraw the MDR charges, which were initially slated to be effective. Merchants argued that imposing these charges during the peak festive shopping season would lead to substantial losses. The government has now extended the deadline, allowing these charges to take effect only after the festive period concludes.
