Major global oil companies, including ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Chevron, and TotalEnergies, reportedly did not send top executives to the World Petroleum Congress in Riyadh on October 12. Their absence followed deadly Houthi attacks on the Saudi capital, raising security concerns. Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman acknowledged the serious threat from recent attacks, despite insisting the kingdom remains safe. The congress itself had been postponed from April due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
