Hawaii's State Bird, Nēnē, Saved From Extinction Through Captive Breeding

Hindustan Times · environment

Hawaii's state bird, the nēnē goose, was brought back from the brink of extinction. By 1950, fewer than 30 nēnē remained in the wild due to hunting and habitat destruction. Captive breeding programs, initiated in the mid-20th century, aimed to restore the population. Over 2,000 birds were released between 1960 and 1997, with further reintroductions on Kauai proving successful due to the absence of predators. By 2022, the nēnē population had rebounded to 3,862 statewide.
