Maryland plans to replace the Chesapeake Bay Bridge with two new four-lane spans, potentially increasing development pressure on the Eastern Shore's agricultural land. Farmers and conservation groups are requesting a dedicated state fund of several hundred million dollars to preserve farmland. The project, expected to begin construction in 2032, could impact over 111,000 acres across Caroline, Queen Anne's, and Talbot counties, which account for about 22% of Maryland's agricultural sales.
