The Hindu · india

Farmers in Kuttanad are facing significant concerns due to a widespread rice leaf mite infestation, locally known as ‘Karaval’, affecting second-crop paddy fields. Joint inspections by officials from the M.S. Swaminathan Rice Research Station and Kerala Centre for Pest Management confirmed the infestation. Experts attribute the rapid spread to the current weather pattern of hot days and intermittent rain, which favors the proliferation of the mite species Oligonychus oryzae.
