Loud Celebrations Cause Subclinical Hearing Damage
The Hindu · india
A new research paper published in Scientific Reports identifies 'subclinical hearing damage' from high-level amplified music at recreational and celebratory events. Sound pressure levels in India often exceed 90 dBA, potentially causing noise-induced hearing loss. This damage, termed 'cochlear synaptopathy,' affects cochlear synapses without impacting outer hair cells, leading to potentially irreversible, undetectable hearing loss. Even short exposures to levels above 120 dB SPL can harm ears.
