India's Shining Cities Are Dimming The Twinkle In Our Skies Due To Light Pollution
Times of India · environment
Urban India's expanding cities are causing significant light pollution, turning night skies into a permanent glow of orange or grey haze. This artificial light at night (ALAN) scatters in the atmosphere, making faint stars invisible. A 2023 study found the night sky's brightness is increasing globally by 9.6% annually, doubling roughly every eight years. This phenomenon not only affects stargazing but also impacts wildlife habitats, human sleep patterns, and natural ecosystems. The stars are still present, but we can no longer see them due to excessive artificial illumination.
