Supreme Court Rules No Reservation After Religious Conversion

News18 Hindi · india

The Supreme Court has ruled that individuals converting from Hinduism to other religions, such as Islam, are not eligible for reservation benefits. This decision upholds a previous Madras High Court ruling that overturned a Tamil Nadu government order allowing converts to be classified as 'backward class Muslims'. The court clarified that leaving the Hindu social system means losing eligibility for welfare benefits based on previous social backwardness. Furthermore, the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, stipulates that only Hindus, Buddhists, or Sikhs can be recognized as Scheduled Castes.
